The aims of this study were: 1) to study the effects of parental care & family disruption on suicide attempts & ideation in 2 age groups (14-17 & 18-24); & 2) to investigate whether higher rates of attempts & ideation observed among young females are related to more negative parental care. In the 14-17-year-olds, the rate of suicidal behaviours was found to double when there was a marital break-up, even if parental care remained good. No definitive answer was found for the second hypothesis.
