Suicide rates in prisons in the United Kingdom remain a major concern. The author describes one intervention program loosely modeled on the American “buddy” system. This model uses specially selected & trained inmates who offer services to depressed prisoners ranging from befriendment to intensive support while they are in an acute suicidal state. Other programs are also being initiated throughout the prison service to deal with inmate suicides. (1 ref.)
