The relationship between alcohol use & suicidal tendencies was evaluated. Subjects were 50 male patients admitted for alcohol treatment to the psychiatry department of the Ankara university medical school. Suicidal thoughts & attempts, & depression were higher among the alcoholics than among a control group. Attempts by alcoholics were impulsive & were related to family problems, financial problems & negative self-perception. Suicidal ideation increased with increased alcohol consumption.
