Suicide in Residential Treatment: Causes, Assessment, and Treatment Issues

This paper examines attitudes, myths & causes associated with suicide in children & adolescents. Treatment issues & risk assessment are discussed with special attention to limitations in predicting risk. Ethical & legal issues are reviewed. Finally, management of the suicidal patient in a treatment setting is discussed with special attention given to assisting staff who are impacted by suicidal behaviour in a patient. (15 refs.)
