613 high school students completed measures of suicidal ideation, depression, hopelessness, life stress, loneliness, alcohol & drug use, & reasons for living. Females reported greater suicidal ideation, depression & reasons for living. Males reported higher loneliness, substance abuse, & a greater fear of disapproval over having suicidal thoughts. This fear, more anger & impulsivity, & less help-seeking behavior among males are offered as variables which may explain observed gender differences.
