The author discusses the development of the suicide prevention program in the Manteca (California) Unified School District. First, a set of guidelines & procedures for dealing with potential suicides was developed. After the guidelines were presented to the school board, the prevention program was then incorporated into the health education curriculum. Suicide awareness sessions were presented to high school staff members. Peer counselling was set up as the final component of the program.
