States with a higher concentration of suicide prevention centers in 1970 had higher suicide rates in 1970 but experienced less of an increase in the suicide rates during the next decade. The results of this study, therefore, provide some support for the beneficial impact of suicide prevention centers on the communities that they serve. (16 refs.)
