Pathologists were identified from the membership lists of the Royal College of Pathologists from 1974-87, establishing a sample group of 4,152. Overall mortality was lower among the study group compared to the general population of England & Wales, although there were significantly more deaths due to suicide in both male & female pathologists. This finding has also been reported in other studies. (8 refs.)
