To explore the inconsistencies reported in various studies which examined the differences between urban & nonurban suicide rates, the suicide rates of the 50 largest Standard Metropolitan Statistical areas which in 1960 were located only in one state were compared with the suicide rates of the states in which they were situated. Results showed that the suicide rates of the 50 major urban areas were not significantly different from the suicide rates of the states where they were located. (3 refs)
