The standard of care in the assessment of suicidal patients is outlined within the context of the legal system & process regarding malpractice actions. Specific guidelines for reasonable & prudent caregiving are discussed. Particular reference is made to the need for contemporaneous documentation of evaluation & treatment decisions, calling attention to the clinician’s need to attend to good clinical practice versus an overconcern with issues of clinical malpractice.
