In this letter to the editor, Dr. Galanos comments on an earlier article by David Casey (see SIEC #911319) in which Casey noted that death certificates do not always provide data of interest in the statistical evaluation of suicide. Dr. Galanos points out that the needed data may be obtained from autopsy reports. He states that only autopsy data can provide the type of information needed to understand the increasing suicide rate in the elderly. Casey’s reply follows.
