The author discusses the present situation of suicide prevention services in Portugal & the unwillingness of the Portuguese Health Department to create a suicide prevention centre. She states that the suicide rate has remained steady only because there has been considerable underreporting of the number of suicides since 1980. She urges IASP & Euro-WHO members to assist efforts being made to obtain social & economic support for a prevention centre in Portugal.
