4 strategies for preventing suicide among the elderly are discussed: education & training of caregivers about depression, alcoholism & suicide; early detection & treatment of these conditions; expansion & development of health & mental health services to meet the needs of the vulnerable elderly; & restriction of firearms. As the elderly population grows, the problem of suicide in this group threatens to escalate. Active measures must be taken to reduce the number of suicides. (30 refs.)
