This article reports on 3 studies by Rabkin, Gutierrez & Perry which found that suicidal ideation & attempts attributable to the diagnosis of HIV are rare. Among the small minority who had high ideation or who had attempted suicide, almost all had done so before learning of their diagnosis. However, psychiatrist David Ostrow cautions against generalizing these findings to all HIV groups & calls for more research focussed on present high risk groups, such as minorities & drug abusers.
