This article describes some myths, as well as facts, about suicide among the elderly. The authors discuss the following: the increase of suicide with age, particularly among men; major depression as a cause of suicide in the elderly; the increased suicide risk associated with alcohol abuse; the importance of directly asking patients about suicidal intent; and, clues of suicidal intent & appropriate reactions by a physician.
