The Center for Adolescent Mental Health at Washington University developed “competence building” groups which train suicidal youth in problem-solving skills, social skills, skills to cope with stress, & skills to cope with feelings of depression & anger. These groups were designed to be used along with individual & family therapy already being provided. This chapter describes techniques used in competence building groups & discusses theoretical & empirical support for their use. (54 refs.)
