Data on the suicide rate from 1922-35 & from 1965-88 were obtained from annual journals & original documents. During the period of Estonian independence (1922-35), the suicide rate was 16.7/100,000. During the Depression this rate temporarily rose to 30 & declined to 20.6 by 1935. From 1965-85, the suicide rate averaged 33/100,000. However, a decline in the male rate from 55.2 to 36.8 has occurred since 1986. The effects of sociopolitical changes & of limitations on alcohol sales are discussed.
