Examined census data on deaths by age, economic activity status, & social class among males (aged 16-64 yrs) of working age for England, Wales, & Scotland around 1971 & 1981. Suicide & undetermined death rates showed a progressive increase with age & a markedly higher rate in the lower social classes. Findings are discussed in terms of the social drift & social genesis hypotheses, with emphasis on the effects of long-term unemployment. (24 refs.)
