1312 alcoholics admitted to the University Hospital, Lund, Sweden from 1949-1969 were followed up until December 1980. 88 of 537 deaths were officially registered as suicides. Alcoholics who later committed suicide had a high rate of depressive & dysphoric symptoms & were more brittle & sensitive than the others, while the frequencies of cognitive impairment & delirium tremens were similar. The ratings did not differentiate between those who committed suicide early or late after admission.
