The question of the validity of Irish suicide rates has been the subject of debate for some 20 years. The general feeling among many clinicians is that the rate is rising & is considerably in excess of the official figures. The author tested this belief by comparing the 1989 suicide rate for a specific section of County Limerick to the suicide rate for all of Ireland. Implications of his findings are discussed.
