Based on his belief that hunger striking is attempted suicide, the author says that suicide attempters are mentally & emotionally unstable & must be treated as such. Seymour argues that it is a doctor’s duty to prevent suicide, thus they should initiate whatever treatment is necessary to save a hunger striker’s life. Failure to do so should result in legal &/or professional misconduct charges. Similarly, anyone who incites others to self-destructive acts should be held criminally responsible.
