In an effort to determine whether media coverage of suicide encourages imitative suicides, the author of this study compared the rates of suicide & attempted suicide for a British town before & during an extensive newspaper strike. Rates for a nearby town without a strike were also analyzed. Although rates did not change substantially, the author found that there was a significantly high number of suicides within 4 days of an inquest, & then a decline. (VM)
