When antidepressant therapy fails to ameliorate the cardinal features of depression – sleep & appetite disturbance, suicidality – the clinician must try an alternate treatment strategy. This paper describes in detail 2 alternatives in potentiating the effects of antidepressants & in converting antidepressant medication nonresponders to responders. Other augmentation strategies are also briefly described, including the concurrent use of 2 antidepressants from different drug classes. (21 refs.)
