In this study, rates of attempted suicide were examined for changes in age & sex from 1971-72 & 1986-87, & a survey of all patients of a Perth hospital was completed to determine whether attempted suicides were underreported. The authors found an increase of 47% in the rate of attempted suicide for males, particularly in age groups 15-19 & 40-44. The rate for females decreased by 9%. Between one-fifth to one-third of persons who attempted suicide were not recorded as such. (VM)
