Many young people coming into state care have life histories similar to those of individuals who have attempted or committed suicide. Foster parents can help professionals determine suicidal risk by noting the presence of indicators, & charting significant behavioural changes over time. It is critical that support also be given to foster parents, who may experience feelings of helplessness, fear, guilt & responsibility throughout the duration of the suicidal crisis. (12 refs.)
