This article begins by reviewing studies reported since 1978 on sex role conflict, precipitants to alcoholism, female sexuality & alcoholism, & cognitive impairment among female alcoholics. Next, a study is presented which compares alcoholic & nonalcoholic women. The study examines the womens’ early life events, family relationships, impulse control, early drinking behaviors, role behaviors, depression, suicide attempts & social supports.
