Of 1,195 alcoholics treated in a psychiatric hospital during 1974-86, 150 patients who died were examined. 86 natural deaths & 53 violent deaths (12 suicides) were observed. Alcoholics who died from violent causes were hospitalized 10 years earlier & also died 10 years earlier than those who died from natural causes. Furthermore, they failed more frequently to change their drinking habits & their deaths tended to occur immediately after discharge. Ss were often single & of low economic status.
