The author asserts that youth are paying the price for the loss of authority in their lives. Chemical dependency & suicide are 2 of the most visible manifestations of this loss. It is argued that adults in general have abdicated their responsibility to instill clear moral values in youth partially because adults are reluctant to represent authority. The author says that adults must re-establish meaning & authority in their own lives & then work to promote these qualities in the lives of youth.
