The author argues that the only other finding of potentially greater predictive value for suicide than psychiatric diagnosis alone is that found by himself & Robins of a close temporal association between a disrupted interpersonal relationship & suicide in alcoholics. This disruption has also been seen in studies of other substance abusers. The author suggests that all available resources should be used to help substance abusers through suicidal & other crises.
