As many as 4,000 Canadians commit suicide every year. Risk factors include chronic or psychiatric illness, drug & alcohol abuse & traumatic life events. Physicians are the “gatekeepers” for the prevention of suicide. Their task is to identify the generalized high-risk factors & the individual clinical features of the suicidal patient & formulate a plan to manage the patient to minimize the risk of death. (7 refs.)
