This study examined all the suicides in those over 60 in the Lothian & Borders region of Scotland from 1983-88. With the exception of previous attempters, the authors conclude that there are no characteristics unique to this age group, & therefore accurate diagnosis & assessment is difficult. The medical & legal issues raised by certain case histories are discussed. The authors conclude that prevention should be a general function in the care of the elderly. (VM)
