These 2 letters to the editor discuss an editorial by Richard Smith about prison suicides. The 1st writer believes sucidality is encouraged in large, busy, overcrowded remand centres with enforced idleness. The 2nd writer agrees with Smith that a reduction in prison suicides demands a cultural change, & asserts that the way to achieve this is to improve training of professionals – such as psychiatrists – who deal with offenders.
