Interviewed 26 HIV-positive injecting drug users to examine their experiences in relation to hearing the news, communicating the diagnosis to others, current drug use & sexual behaviour, & perceptions of the future. Although many Ss were pessimistic in their outlook on the future & a significant minority were harbouring suicidal thoughts, Ss had a wide range of responses to each of the areas examined. This variability may undermine any single approach to patient or client management. (27 refs.)
