The effects of lithium on the human body are widespread, but it remains unclear which of its many effects is the one which mediates clinical benefit. This article summarizes the main clinical effects of lithium, such as mood stabilization, antimanic effect, antiaggressive action, & possibly, a reduction in suicidal behavior. The authors conclude that lithium has not one, but several distinct clinical benefits. (VM)
