Conducted a prospective follow-up study of 30 patients with histories of suicidal behaviour. Ss completed the Montgomery & Asberg Depression Rating Scale. Most Ss suffered recurrent episodes of brief depression, mainly of moderate to severe intensity. 2/3 of the episodes lasted 2-4 days. The recurrences were frequent, irregular & apparently unpredictable. The association of brief episodes of depression with suicidal behaviour is discussed. (7 refs.)
