This article discusses the “Werther Effect” which was named after the main character in novel by Goethe. Werther committed suicide, & many suicide deaths were blamed on the suggestive influence of this book. The author discusses similar events in America, with research on well-publicized suicide deaths. The author suggests that today, suicide clusters among teens, & media reporting of clusters, are more prevalent concerns. Reported clusters from 1966-86 are described. (VM)
