This article discusses the cognitive processes that influence self destructive behavior. The author presents clinical material from a discussion with young people, which illustrates signs of suicide intent, including: a tendency toward isolation, substance abuse, low self-esteem, a sense of hopelessness, guilt reaction & psychological pain, & a progressive withdrawal from relationships & favored activities. A chart is included to guage negative thought patterns & suicidal potential. (VM)
