In this article, numerous studies on substance abuse & self-destructive behavior are reviewed. The relationship between substance abuse & psychiatric disorders is explored, as wellas the emergence of research into the biologic causes of alcoholism, & the importance of social support systems. Diagnostic & management issues are also discussed. The authors conclude that a multidisciplinary team approach is necessary for effective treatment. (VM)
