This letter to the editor is a reply to a paper which asserted that there was press silence in Italy about suicide, which found that Italy, like the rest of Europe, had a rising suicide rate. One study in particular is noted, which found that in regions where more general hospital psychiatric beds were provided, there was a smaller increase in the suicide rate. (VM)
