This article discusses the difficulties in predicting suicide. The authors review risk factors, such as living alone, unemployment, & physical or mental illness. They review key studies on suicide prevention, & discuss depression, alcohol dependence, schizophrenia & personality disorders. The authors advise clinicians to establish therapeutic relationships with patients with risk factors. They conclude that further research on suicidal behavior & prevention is needed. (VM)
