A cohort of University of Melbourne medical graduates from 1950-59 were followed up to 1986, when mortality rates were determined. The major causes of death were found to be cardiovascular disease & malignant neoplasms. The standardized mortality rates (SMRs) were low; however, the study revealed the doctors had high rates of death by suicide, other violent deaths, & mental disorders. As well, female doctors had a higher rate of suicide & of accidental deaths than male doctors. (VM)
