In this study, cerebrospinal metabolites were measured in 17 female patients with borderline personality disorder & 17 controls. The levels of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), homovanillic acid (HVA), & 3-methosy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) were found to be similar in the groups. Within the borderline group, all patients had some history of suicidal behvior, but lower levels of CSF 5-HIAA were found in genuine suicide attempters. (VM)
