In this study, 79 schizophrenic patients between 17 and 30 years old were tested, and then retested two and half and five years later. More than 50% of the sample had a poor overall outcome, with either severe impairment in functioning or suicide. Only 17% showed complete remission by the second follow-up. The authors conclude that, although progressive deterioration is not commonly shown in schizophrenia studies, their findings challenge this.
