Explores the association between availability of firearms (as measured by the percentage of suicides using firearms & the accidental death rate from firearms in each state) in 1970 & the rates of primary & secondary murder calculated by Smith & Parker for the 48 continental states. The percentage of suicides using firearms was positively associated with the rate of primary murder, but not with secondary murder. Availability of firearms appeared to be associated with rates of primary murder only.
