A classification of attempted suicide is proposed, based upon whether the resulting self-harm is foreseen or desired. The categories are as follows: failed suicides, deliberate self-harm, subintentioned self-harm, counterproductive self-harm, & pseudo self-harm. It is suggested that these categories may be useful in choosing groups to compare & contrast in future research. (4 refs.)
