The author asserts the key to sucidal assessment is obtaining information, primarily regarding pain & the threshold of pain tolerance. He believes that since different people communicate indifferent ways, eclecticism in approach is essential. The best approach is the one that works best given the different characteristics of the patient & therapist involved. The author also feels the best approach must include a direct inquiry into suicidal intent.
