Regional variations across Hungary in suicide rate & in rate of treated depression were examined. The suicide rate was lower when the rate of treated depression was high. As well, correlations between higher suicide rates & higher perinatal mortality & divorce rates were found. No correlation between the suicide rate & schizophrenia was found. The authors conclude that underdiagnosis of depression may contribute to Hungary’s high suicide rate.
