More than 10,000 people over 60 years of age in the U.S. commit suicide every year. The main body of this article explains how to recognize suicidal individuals. The author also outlines the reasons why the elderly commit suicide, and dispels some common misconceptions about suicide among the elderly. She concludes that the elderly require much more community support to reduce suicides. (VM)
