The importance of suicide prevention & the role of the psychiatrist in integrating psychological & social treatment measures is emphasized. The author discusses methodological limitations, recent developments in biochemical studies of suicide & problems in developing predictors of suicide. Findings from a study at an Indian hospital are reported to illustrate the magnitude of the suicide problem. Psychiatric evaluation of attempters show that 80% had a psychiatric illness. (45 refs.)
