The authors discuss a 4 part training program used with high school students to help prevent adolescent suicide. This program was developed as a response to the suicide of a 16 year old honour student in a rural Illinois community. Because school counselors are typically unable to provide necessary counseling services due to a high student-to-counselor ratio, it is hoped that schools will examine more actively peer counseling programs as an acceptable alternative for an underserved population.
